A Taste of Gold: Calaveras Wines at the 2025 San Francisco Wine Competition

Updated: 9 minutes ago

Congratulations to the many Calaveras wineries who took home medals in the 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition! Nearly 1,000 wineries from the United States, Canada and Mexico submitted more than 5,500 wines for the 2025 competition.

Our winery members took home one Sweepstakes, one Best of Class, three Double Golds, six Golds, twenty silvers and six bronzes! The highest honor is the Sweepstakes, awarded in categories such as Best Sparkling, White, Rosé, Red, Specialty, and Packaging. Sweepstakes winners are determined by a vote from all judges participating in the competition. To be considered for the Sweepstakes, wines must first achieve the Best of Class designation, which signifies the top wine within a specific division. Additionally, wines can earn a Double Gold distinction if they receive a unanimous Gold rating from a judging panel consisting of either three or five members.

"The Val du Vino Barbera stood out for the balance and clarity of the variety's telltale juicy cherry and berry fruit, insinuation of just enough oak to provide flirting diversion, a winking flash of anise, bashful tannins, chirpy acidity, and thin thread of sweetness." - Wine Judge Mike Dunne

About the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition:

The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is currently the largest wine competition in North America. All bonded wineries in the United States, Canada, and Mexico are eligible to enter the wine competition. No entries from wines grown or produced outside of North America are eligible to enter. Professional wine judges are sourced throughout the major wine regions in North America to offer diversity of expertise to each judging panel. A major advantage to wineries entering the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is the vast recognition and outreach of the award-winning wines including the published wine award special section of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.
