The Calaveras Wine Alliance in partnership with the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and the Calaveras County Fairgrounds will be hosting a Grand Tasting Wine event on Wednesday, May 16th to kick off the Calaveras County Fair and recognize the achievements of the Calaveras County Gold Medal Winners of the Sierra Foothills Wine Competition. The 2nd annual event will highlight the winners of Calaveras Countys’ Best in Show, Double Gold and Gold Medal wines by offering tastings and delectable catered bites and appetizers.
Every year, a team of 25 esteemed wine experts from the Sacramento Region and the Bay Area come to Calaveras County Fairgrounds in April to judge in a blind tasting of professional and amateur wines submitted by Calaveras County and the neighboring counties. The Calaveras County Best in Show, Double Gold and Gold Medal winners are invited to attend the Grand Tasting event and offer their winning wines for a public tasting at the wine pavilion located within the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.
The wine pavilion features an exhibit space that includes an interactive self guided experience showcasing sustainable practices in winemaking and grape growing. Lectures on growing grapes sustainably and soil and microclimate impacts on wine, and special guests will include wildlife experts and their predatory birds, vineyard goats, vermiculture display and live bugs used for sustainable practices will be on display. In addition, local agricultural experts and master gardeners will be hosting various workshops and lectures and topics related to holistic grazing practices and garden related topics. “We have an amazing opportunity to utilize our member resources, local agricultural experts and wine and grape growing professionals to showcase the quality of our region, our strong dedication to sustainable and organic practices and the progressive and innovative spirit that exist within our wine community.” Wine Alliance Director Shelby French says. “The Chamber of Commerce and the Winegrape Alliance are very grateful for the partnership and support of the Calaveras County Fairgrounds and the Grand Tasting sponsors that include Mark Twain Hospital, Calaveras Lumber and Next Home Properties who have committed to helping support our efforts to improve the pavilion and realize our goals.”
