Butte Fire Update: 95% Contained And Calaveras is Open for Business
Gold Country, CA—At 6:25 am today, CalFire reported that the Butte Fire is now 95% contained and is expected to be 100% contained by October 1st. In addition, all evacuation orders have been lifted and life is getting back to normal for the vast majority of Calaveras businesses.
Miraculously, almost all of Calaveras County’s popular family destinations are unscathed including Moaning Cavern, Mercer Caverns, Ironstone Vineyards (and almost all of our wine industry), our museums, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, the historic towns of Murphys, Arnold, Angels Camp, Copperopolis, Valley Springs, San Andreas and Mokelumne Hill. Even California Cavern, located in Mountain Ranch, an area extensively burned by the fire, reopened for guided walk tours last weekend.
It’s a beautiful time to visit Calaveras now that we have our clear skies back, with cooler temperatures and fall colors beginning to show especially in the higher elevations. Now more than ever, Calaveras relies on its tourism industry to rebound from the economic impact of this disaster. Choosing to make Calaveras your holiday shopping and weekend getaway destination could help us significantly in our recovery.
We are delighted to present a full calendar of events offering fun and diverse entertainment and activities throughout the county, which can be found online athttp://www.gocalaveras.com/calendar-of-events/. Some of the events posted have become impromptu Butte Fire fundraisers, and others have been organized specifically to benefit those who lost their homes to the fire.
